How to get along with your Classmates 28 July 2017

WALT - Write an explanation writing

Success Criteria:
  • I must write my writing independently
  • I must re-read and get others to check my work
  • I must make sure all my punctuation and grammar are correct

How to get along with your Classmates:

Whether you’re attending a new school and know no one there or just an quiet outcast of your class making and meeting new friends is a scary and sometimes risky subject. Little things like knowing what to say and knowing what to do is always a big deal especially when it comes to this. Follow these few small tips and tricks and you’ll hopefully gain some or more new friends.

Helping others. One way that can help making new friends easier is to help others when they need it. Simple things like lending pencils or pens can help build a friendship and it will also show a act of kindness to the person you want to be friends with. They will definitely remember it and keep it in mind when they need to pick a partner or friends just in general.

Talking to people who have the same interests as you. A great conversation starter is to talk about topics you and the person who you want befriend like, whether the topics are sports, hobbies, music and etc. Liking and being interested in the same topics and subjects can help build a more stronger bond and connection.

Greeting others. An obvious way to make new friends is to greet others to show a act of kindness and appreciation. Saying things like “Good Morning” and giving compliments can boost others confidence and by doing so it’ll give you a good reputation and you’ll gain lots of friends.

These here are just a few ways you can make new friends. Hopefully over time you’ll end up being friends with all your classmates and hopefully even make some lifelong friends that you’ll stay with forever.

Mistake Poem

Mistake Poem 28 July 2017

WALHT - Write creatively on the topic from personal experiences

Success Criteria:
  • I must reread and edit my work
  • I must write the poem independently
  • I must use the correct punctuation and grammar

Poem:
I came back home from a tiring day
So tired, I was ready to hit the hay
But as I was about to lay
My annoying sister came out to play

She came into the room with a look of frustration
She said she couldn’t get to the train station
She didn’t have any clothes to wear
She asked me if I had any I could spare

I said no with a tint of annoyance
I couldn’t sleep in peace
But then suddenly she left with ease
And that’s when I noticed something was off
I walked to my closet and began to scoff

There I noticed my favourite t-shirt and leggings were missing
I barged out my room almost nearly hissing
I walked up to the door and pulled a loud knock
I opened the door and she was in a state of shock

What ended up happening at the end of the day was disastrous
But I decided not to make a scene because that would have been popostures.
But at the end of the day we all know who wins.

The youngest one, the rest go in the bin

For Writing, we had to make a poem about mistakes that have happened in the past, or made up mistakes. The moral of the poem is that it is okay to make mistakes and hopefully in the future, you'll learn from them and never do the same mistake again.

In this Math Activity we had to find the volume of a Rectangular Prism. This activity would give us a little animation that we had to watch to give us the answer to the question. The question we had to answer was “How many unit cubes did it take to form the bottom layer?”. The animation that we had to watch showed that it took nine unit cubes to fill in the bottom layer of a Rectangular Prism. I found this activity fun and interesting, but I wish there were more than one question for us to answer.

Information Report: Matariki

Information Report: Matariki 16 June 2017

Matariki means “little eyes” or “eyes of god” is the traditional Maori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades. A pleiades is seven daughters or sisters that are turned into a group of stars. Matariki also celebrates the Maori New Year or a New Start.

Matariki is celebrated in a lot of different ways, depending of what tribe you’re from. It is also celebrated at different times. Some tribes will celebrate Matariki in May/June and others would celebrate it on an first moon or full moon following the rise of Matariki, This year it is due to begin on the 25th of June. Many people celebrate Matariki by lighting up fireworks and putting on light shows. They also put on lots of different activities people can do while they’re celebrating it. People also do performances throughout the night so people can keep entertained.

In the 21st century the new moon symbolized the following rise of Matariki. It signaled that Matariki would start to begin. Stars would also become brighter and moons would change to half moons, full moons, and quarter moons quicker than usual. All these things would signal the beginning of Maori New Year.

In the end Matariki is a fun event.  People can go to watch and learn new things. Although it is a Maori celebration, people of other cultures and religions can take part in the celebration as well.

During maths time we had to find the volume of a cone by using our own made calculator. Mr. Ramkolowan thought us how to make a calculator using Google Sheets, and it helped us figure out the answer for some of the questions. I found this activity interesting because we learnt a lot about maths and volume and we also made our own calculator.

Maintenance: Number Differences

Maintenance: Number Differences 23 May 2017

Screenshot 2017-05-23 at 9.39.17 AM.pngScreenshot 2017-05-23 at 9.39.05 AM.png

In this math activity we had to arrange a bunch of different numbers in different orders. The only rule in this game is that we have to put the odd numbers like 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc in the squares that join together. I found this game really interesting and I learnt a lot of different ways you can join them together.

Inference Writing

WALHT - Use inferences correctly while reading

Success Criteria:
  • I must include strong vocabulary in my writing
  • I must include information that describes the picture

Screenshot 2017-05-18 at 12.17.10 PM.png

The baby is outside and the season is autumn. The weather is clear and the sun is out. By the expression from his face you can tell that he might be sad or agitated, the holiday must be easter because he is wearing a blue bunny headband. Maybe he couldn’t find any easter eggs during a easter hunt and that lead him to be sad.

Screenshot 2017-05-19 at 12.10.28 PM.png

In this picture the girl looks sad and she feels down. I’m assuming she maybe is sick or has a cold so she couldn’t go and play outside. She is also laying down in bed and that one of the things that can help if you’re sick especially.

Screenshot 2017-05-19 at 12.22.00 PM.png

By the look of the picture I can tell the season is maybe summer or spring because they are playing outside, especially in the water. The girl in the picture is floating in the air so I’m guessing she might fall down or slip off the boat. If she fell she might of probably laughed afterwards or cried.

Math Activity: Measurement

Measurement 18 May 2017

Screenshot 2017-05-16 at 10.05.25 AM.pngScreenshot 2017-05-16 at 10.06.16 AM.png

This math activity was all about measurement. In this math task we had to pick precise weights that will balance with the unknown weight on the right side. I learnt in this math activity that you can use different weights to add up with the unknown weight. So for example if the unknown weight was 7kg, you could use (4kg, 2kg, and 1kg), and (4kg and 3kg). I found this activity really fun especially because we could use different combinations to add up to the unknown weight, and have fun learning as well.

Screenshot 2017-05-10 at 11.07.09 AM.png

During reading time in room 7 we had to do reading comprehensions online. The reading comprehension I read was about rainbows. The story passage I read included information about rainbows like how they are formed, and the different types of rainbows there are. I found the story really interesting and I liked how it included facts that some people never knew before. For the questions I got 100%. Hopefully next time when I do an higher level I can get 100% as well.

Math Activity: Fruit Splash

Math Activity: Fruit Splash      23 March 2017

Screenshot 2017-03-23 at 9.09.56 AM.pngScreenshot 2017-03-23 at 9.09.34 AM.pngScreenshot 2017-03-23 at 9.20.44 AM.png

During maths time we had to play math games. One of the games we had to play was called Fruit Splash. In the game we could choose a mode to play. I chose Level 24: Which is add 3 fractions with like denominators. Once you press play the game would give you an equation and you’ll have to smash or click the answer. For example if the equation was 1/6 + 3/6 + 1/6 I would have to find the fruit with the answer 5/6 on it. For the timed one I got 66 for my score. Hopefully next time I can get a higher score and even make it on the leaderboard.

Omaru Creek

Omaru Creek
Screenshot 2017-03-07 at 2.26.19 PM.png

This term our inquiry topic is about saving omaru creek. We chose this because we saw numerous articles about the creek and how polluted it was. There were even blocked pipes and a dead catfish was found. It was a big problem. Since we picked this as our topic it is our job to spread awareness and help Omaru creek be a clean healthy creek again.

Descriptive Writing: The Library

Screenshot 2017-03-07 at 12.40.54 PM.png

“BOOM” I hear in the distance, unfortunately disturbing my reading. I walked slowly to other side of the room where the sound had come from. It lead me to an strange door. I held my hand in front of the doorknob and slowly started to turn it. The door fully opened as I slowly made my way through.

The room smelt of old vintage things and dust. It was an library, but not any ordinary library. The books were stacked and floating in the air. Some were even flipped upside down. I strolled my way through the room until one book caught my eye. I put my hand out to grab it and it stopped spinning. I brought it down to my level and started to read the context. The book was about knights and castles, and as I slowly flipped the page I saw a picture of knights on horses. The picture was still and their legs were in the air.

As I read the first sentence and the picture started to come alive. The horses in the picture started to gallop out of the book. Out of shock I dropped the book. The book close and the horses and knights disappeared. I picked up another book. This one containing snow and rain. I slowly opened the book and looked at it carefully. As soon as I opened the book snow and rain started to fall from the sky. The rain turned into snow mid way. The snow drops hit the ground and smashed into little pieces.
“Richelle, I’m home!”

I quickly close the books and everything disappeared, even the room. I rushed out the door and into my room. I jumped onto my bed and pretended to read an book, just in time for my mum to barge into my room.
