How to get along with your Classmates:

Whether you’re attending a new school and know no one there or just an quiet outcast of your class making and meeting new friends is a scary and sometimes risky subject. Little things like knowing what to say and knowing what to do is always a big deal especially when it comes to this. Follow these few small tips and tricks and you’ll hopefully gain some or more new friends.

Helping others. One way that can help making new friends easier is to help others when they need it. Simple things like lending pencils or pens can help build a friendship and it will also show a act of kindness to the person you want to be friends with. They will definitely remember it and keep it in mind when they need to pick a partner or friends just in general.

Talking to people who have the same interests as you. A great conversation starter is to talk about topics you and the person who you want befriend like, whether the topics are sports, hobbies, music and etc. Liking and being interested in the same topics and subjects can help build a more stronger bond and connection.

Greeting others. An obvious way to make new friends is to greet others to show a act of kindness and appreciation. Saying things like “Good Morning” and giving compliments can boost others confidence and by doing so it’ll give you a good reputation and you’ll gain lots of friends.

These here are just a few ways you can make new friends. Hopefully over time you’ll end up being friends with all your classmates and hopefully even make some lifelong friends that you’ll stay with forever.

Mistake Poem

Mistake Poem 28 July 2017

WALHT - Write creatively on the topic from personal experiences

Success Criteria:
  • I must reread and edit my work
  • I must write the poem independently
  • I must use the correct punctuation and grammar

Poem:
I came back home from a tiring day
So tired, I was ready to hit the hay
But as I was about to lay
My annoying sister came out to play

She came into the room with a look of frustration
She said she couldn’t get to the train station
She didn’t have any clothes to wear
She asked me if I had any I could spare

I said no with a tint of annoyance
I couldn’t sleep in peace
But then suddenly she left with ease
And that’s when I noticed something was off
I walked to my closet and began to scoff

There I noticed my favourite t-shirt and leggings were missing
I barged out my room almost nearly hissing
I walked up to the door and pulled a loud knock
I opened the door and she was in a state of shock

What ended up happening at the end of the day was disastrous
But I decided not to make a scene because that would have been popostures.
But at the end of the day we all know who wins.

The youngest one, the rest go in the bin

For Writing, we had to make a poem about mistakes that have happened in the past, or made up mistakes. The moral of the poem is that it is okay to make mistakes and hopefully in the future, you'll learn from them and never do the same mistake again.

Screenshot 2017-07-06 at 12.17.11 PM.pngScreenshot 2017-07-06 at 12.23.01 PM.png

In this reading activity we had to use making connections to answer questions about a passage. The passage I read was about the pollution and how big of a problem it was becoming. For this activity we had to read the passage and pick what summary connected to the story best. I got nearly all of the questions right and succeed in saving the city. I learnt that there are lots of different connection people can make but only one relates more and ir relevent. I found this activity very fun and I hope to play this more in the future.

Reading Comprehension: Making Connections

Making Connections to Text 6 July 2017

Screenshot 2017-07-06 at 11.09.04 AM.png

  1. Why is it important to connect to the text when you read?
It gives our brains to store new information about the story
  2. How do connections make it easier for your brain to find information?
Making connections give us more ways we can understand different things

  1. What is self-to-text connection?
Self-to-text is when you connect something that has something in your life to something in the book

  1. What is a text-to-text connection?
Text-to-text is when you connect the story to something similar you have read before

  1. What is a text-to world connection?
Text-to-world is when you connect the story book to something you have proably seen on the news or on the internet

In this reading comprehension we learnt about the importance of the making connections and why it is so useful and helpful. The reading comprehension asked questions and we had to explain our answers to see if we understood the passage. In this activity I learnt the differences between self-to-text, text-to-text and text-to-world. I found this very useful and I hope to use more strategies like this in the future.

Explanation Writing: Pōwhiri

What is a Pōwhiri? July 2017

WALHT - write an explanation writing about a Pōwhiri

Success Criteria:
  • I must double check my work
  • I must use the correct pronunciation
  • I must make sure everything is grammatically correct
  • I must explain what the topic is and give relevant facts

A Pōwhiri is a Maori welcoming ceremony that Maori people use to welcome people into  families, schools, funerals and maraes. Recently it has been used in more situations like a new role in a new workplace or welcoming someone important from another place.

The welcoming ceremony involves speeches that are given from people who are related to the cause or the people who are hosting it. The person or people who get welcomed also give a speech. A Pōwhiri also includes lots of singing and dancing. People would perform popular Maori songs that are appropriate for the cause and dance according to the song.

At the very start of the Pōwhiri people who would host it would perform a “Call of Welcome”. This is where an older women from the hosts would perform a call and lead the person or people they are welcoming into the marae or hall. They would walk very slowly and pause every now and then to remember the ancestors who have passed.

People are also to be respectful and sit down in a special seating order, they would also have to stand up when they are told. Males would have to sit on the outer side of the group and females would sit in the inside.

At the end of the Pōwhiri the guests and people would do a Hongi. A Hongi is a traditional maori greeting were people press their noses together. The Hongi is very popular in Maori culture and especially in Pōwhiri’s.

To conclude, the Pōwhiri is a very important and popular welcoming ceremony in the Maori culture, and the people who are attend whether they are Maori or not should respect and adapt to the Maori culture and their ways.
