For tech today we made an quiche. The quiche had bacon, onion and with cheese on top. We learnt how to make it and like always my partner and I both had different jobs. The quiche tasted nice and I couldn’t wait to show the recipe to my family at home.

This morning some of the year seven and eights attended the harold caravan to learn some new exciting things. One of the activities that we were told we were going to was measuring the amount of sugar in different types of drinks.

Nicole who ran everything got a variety of different drinks for us to measure. There were drinks like Coca Cola, Rock Star, Mother, Wave, Powerade, E2, Flavoured Water, Red Bull, Fresh Up and a few other drinks. We were to look at the label at the back of the drinks and read and see how many teaspoons of sugar were in the drinks. We estimated how much sugar by using how time tables. One teaspoon would equal to a number in the four times table. So, for example if a drink had 51mg in it we would have to look at the four times table and see which one is the closest to that number. So for 51mg there are 13 teaspoons of sugar in there because 4 x 13 = 52 and that is the closest result to the number.

Before we measured everything we had to make an assumption and guess what drink would have the most sugar and what drink would have the least. My assumption was the flavoured water having the least and the coca cola having the most. We got into groups and measured the drinks. My group measured the drinks “Rock Star” and “Mother”. We were surprised and overwhelmed with the result because of how much sugar was actually put into drinks. The rock star had 69mg with 17 teaspoons and the mother had 51mg with 13 teaspoons.

All of the drinks had a lot of sugar in them but the rock star had the most and the flavoured water had the least. I was shocked at the results because I thought coca cola would be one of the ones with the most sugar in it but it was one of the ones with the least. I was also more surprised with the amount of sugar people put in drinks.

At the end of the activity it was time to leave and go back to class to have morning tea. That was our last session of harold and we even got to say hi and bye to harold. I really enjoyed attending the harold sessions and I hope to maybe even see him in the future more often.

I prefer the conventional oven way because I like how the potatoes turn out, But if I were on a budget I would use the microwave because it is easier and uses less time and power.

For Technology, we made Potato Salad with Sausages. We learnt a lot of things like knowing when an egg is ready and when and how long potatoes should be boiled for it to be edible. I found that the cooking part was a little bit hard but once I got the hang of it, it was really fun and intreseting.

For reading grammar, I went on this reading activity called “Grammar Blast”. The activity gives a bunch of questions that we had to answer correctly to test our comprehension and our knowledge in grammar and correct wordings and sentences. I learnt a few new things like differences between words that sound the same but it spelt differently like you’re and your and their and they’re. I found this site a little helpful because i knew some of the things already.

Machines are objects that make it easier for people to do work. Not all machines have lots of parts or motors. Simple machines have only one or two main parts. A shovel, a screwdriver, a knife, a broom, and even a slide on the playground are all simple machines.

Let’s learn about the six types of simple machines.

An inclined plane makes moving and lifting things easier. It is a flat, slanted surface that works like a ramp. Have you ever seen someone load heavy items into the back of a large truck? They may have used a ramp, or inclined plane, to load the truck more easily.

A wedge is a pair of inclined planes attached back-to-back. A wedge is used to force things apart. Have you ever seen someone chop wood with an ax? The head of an ax is a wedge.

A screw is a spiral wrapped around a center post. When you turn it, it can lift objects or hold two objects together. Have you ever opened a bottle of water? When you turn the cap one way, it opens. If you turn it the other way, it seals the bottle shut. The cap is a screw.

A lever is a bar that pivots or turns on a fixed point. The fixed point is called the fulcrum. Have you ever played on a seesaw? The seesaw is a lever. The support in the middle is the fulcrum.

A pulley is a wheel that is used with a cord or rope. When you pull it downward, the other end lifts upward. Have you ever seen someone hoist a flag up a flagpole? The flag is attached to a rope. At the top of the flagpole is a pulley. When you pull the rope downward, the flag rises up the pole.

A wheel and axle is made up of a wheel with a rod attached to it. When the wheel is turned, it turns the axle with it. Have you ever turned a round doorknob to open a door? When you turn a doorknob, you are using a wheel and axle. The knob is a wheel. The rod that it is attached to is an axle.

Area and Perimeter

Area and Perimeter 12 September 2017

On this activity we had to find the area of the shapes and answer all the questions.  The questions would ask questions like “How many shapes have 4 square units?”, and then you would have to click on all the shapes with 4 square units. I got everything right and I found it very interesting. Next time I’m going to challenge myself more and do harder things so I can give my mind a workout.
